When you are found responsible for a traffic offense, the Secretary of state assesses points against your driver's license. Nine points will result in the secretary of state calling you in for an interview; 12 points will result in a suspension. Points are assessed as follows:
| a. manslaughter, negligent homicide, or a felony resulting from the use of a motor vehicle, ORV or snowmobile, | 6 pts |
| b. Drunk Driving (OWI) | 6 pts |
| c. Failure to stop and identify yourself at an accident | 6 pts |
| d. Fleeing and Alluding | 6 pts |
| e. 15 miles over in a work zone | 5 pts |
| f. 15 miles over (speeding) | 4 pts |
| g. Impaired Driving (OVI) | 4 pts |
| h. 10 Miles over in a work zone | 4 pts |
| i. 10 miles over | 3 pts |
| j. 5 miles over | 2 pts |
| k. k. Failure to take a preliminary breathalyzer if under 21 years of age | 2 pts |
| l. Most other traffic offenses | 2 pts |
| m. Impeding traffic | 0 pts |
